Why it matters
Nobody admires a drain until it stops working
A plumbing job is judged on the ten minutes of it you can see. The tap runs, the shower drains, the water is hot. Everything that decides whether it stays that way happens earlier, in a trench or inside a wall, and gets covered up before anyone photographs it.
That is the part worth paying attention to. A drain laid at the wrong fall works for a season. A gas line sized for the wrong appliance load works until the day it does not. Pipework that carries its own weight on the fittings will eventually find the weakest one.
Getting it right the first time is not craftsmanship for its own sake. It is the cheapest version of the job, because the alternative is paying someone to open it up again.

One real job
High pressure feels like good pressure
This house was taking mains water at 700 kPa. Nothing had failed yet, which is exactly the problem. At that pressure every tap spindle, flexible hose, cistern inlet and appliance valve in the building is under constant strain, and the failures it causes look like bad luck.
A pressure limiting valve at the meter brought it down to a steady 500 kPa. Small part, short job, and it quietly stops the next decade of leaks that would otherwise get blamed on cheap tapware.
Testing your pressure takes minutes. A reading that comes back fine is still worth having.

By the job. The price is worked out on site against your actual setup and agreed before any work starts, so there is no meter running while a decision gets made.

It depends on the age and what failed. A unit under about eight years old with a failed element or valve is usually worth repairing. A tank over ten years old that is leaking from the body is not, because the leak is the tank itself. Both options get quoted so the decision is yours.
Turn the water off at the meter, which is usually at the front boundary. Open a tap inside to drain the pressure out of the line, and keep anything electrical clear of the water. Then get in touch. Finding your isolation valve before an emergency is half the battle.
Mains pressure much above 500 kPa wears out taps, flexible hoses and appliance valves years early, and the failures look random until someone puts a gauge on the line. Testing it takes minutes and a pressure limiting valve is a small part.
